After attending school for four years, almost 60 percent of South African children still cannot read for meaning, let alone for enjoyment or pleasure.
Making sense of words begins long before a child starts his or her school career. It starts while they are toddlers.
During their first six years, children learn at a much faster pace than any other time in their lives. It’s actually the first 1000 days of child’s life that shapes their future.
Research suggests that there are four elements that make a big impact on a child’s life:
- Stimulation drastically improves language development.
- Square meals help their brains and bodies grow.
- And the basic right to safety and security is a must; anxiety inhibits a child’s ability to learn.
- And let’s not forget love. Human touch changes the way a child’s brain develops.
Together these elements form a foundation for future learning and success.

The Help a Creche programme aims to mobilise help into the various communities where creches might be in need of some support, whether it be some plants, a coat of paint, volunteers to read a story and spend some time with the kids, or money donations.
You can make a difference.

And that’s where you come in. Everyone, rich or poor, wonders how they can help. And everyone can do something. It’s up to you to decide whether you want to give your time, knowledge, money or skills. It’s way easier to help than you can imagine, and you personally can make a huge difference, but you have to do it now.
Get in touch, so that we can connect you with a creche in your community that could use your help, or if you’d like to nominate a creche that can benefit from this programme.
